What to do when your shower gives you the cold shoulder

If your shower has suddenly lost pressure, gone cold, or stopped working altogether, here are a few simple checks you can do that might solve the problem.

Check other water outlets

First, see if the problem is just in your shower or if it’s affecting the whole house. Try turning on other taps – if they also have low pressure or no water, there could be a bigger issue, like a supply problem or a frozen pipe in cold weather.

 Inspect the showerhead

Over time, showerheads can get clogged with limescale and mineral deposits, which reduce water flow. A simple fix is to unscrew the showerhead and soak it in vinegar or a descaler to break down any blockages. If it’s seen better days, replacing it with a new one is easy and affordable.

Check the valves and isolation switch

Some showers have isolation valves that control water flow so make sure these are fully open. If you have an electric shower, double-check that the power supply or pull-cord switch is on.

 Look for leaks

A hidden leak can reduce water pressure or stop it from flowing properly. Check any visible pipes for drips or damp patches. If you suspect a leak but can’t find it, it’s best to get us in to take a look.

 Test the mixer valve

If you have a thermostatic mixer shower, a faulty valve could be to blame for fluctuating temperatures or a lack of hot water. Adjusting or replacing the valve might do the trick.

Check your boiler or water heater

If your shower problem is related to hot water, your boiler could be the issue. If you have a combi boiler, check the pressure gauge – if it’s too low, topping up the pressure might fix it. If no hot water is coming from any taps, the boiler may need attention.
